Strengthening Energy Data for Sustainable Transformation: A Collaborative Effort

National energy and climate targets, alongside the policies designed to achieve them, hinge on the availability of precise, relevant energy data. Robust national energy statistics play a crucial role in tracking the progress of energy transitions and the transformation of energy systems within any country. In this context, the cross-sectoral working group "Digitalization in the Energy Sector" under the Jordanian-German Energy Partnership has initiated joint work on energy statistics, energy balances, and the digitalization of energy data.

In September 2024, the "Digitalization in the Energy Sector" working group of the Jordanian-German Energy Partnership began its work in the field of energy statistics, energy balances, and the digitization of energy data in Jordan.

Led by the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) and supported by the German Energy Agency (dena) and Prognos AG, the team engaged in intensive dialogues with key stakeholders, including the National Energy Company (NEPCO), the Jordanian Electric Power Company (JEPCO), the Electricity Distribution Company (EDCO), Irbid District Electricity Company (IDECO), the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC), and others. Twelve interviews with around 30 participants from various institutions provided valuable insights on key issues and challenges.

In October 2024, the results were discussed in a joint validation session, followed by an in-depth online discussion with German experts in November. The focus was on the challenges and innovations in energy data and its digitalization. Leading experts and institutions, including the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA), the Working Group on Renewable Energy Statistics (AGEE-Stat), and the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA), participated in the event.

The dialogue will continue in 2025, marking a significant step towards shaping a sustainable energy future for both countries through precise and digitalized energy data.
