New Chapter for the Jordanian-German Energy Partnership

As of April 19, 2024, the German Energy Agency (dena) has taken as implementing agency of the German-Jordanian Energy Partnership (EP). The first general meeting of all working groups and task forces took place on June 13, 2024. During this meeting the Work Program 2024 of the Energy Partnership was adopted by Co-Chairs Ms. Anne Jacobs-Schleithoff, Head of Division North Africa, the Near and Middle East at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and Mr. Nidal Al Qasem, Acting Director of Planning and Organization Development Directorate, Head of International Cooperation Division at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (MEMR). Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to further developing and deepening cooperation in the energy sector and progressing the energy transition.

In order to cover the thematic range, a structure has been introduced to implement the cooperation from 2024. It consists of three main working groups (energy efficiency, electricity grid system and digitalization in the energy sector) and two cross-sectoral task forces (innovation in the energy sector and gender in the energy sector). A pool of strategic topics has been set up for the exchange and dialogue on topics with energy policy significance for which no working group has been established yet. All working groups and Task Forces will be co-chaired by ministerial representatives from Germany and Jordan.

The 2024 work programme of the Jordanian-German energy partnership was geared towards achieving the following overarching goals:

  • Strengthening the energy efficiency improvement, jointly develop the governance structures for enhanced energy efficiency in Jordan and guidelines for the development of future strategic documents.
  • Deepening the dialogue in the field of power grid stability and regional cross-border electricity interconnection.
  • Sharing knowledge and experience exchange in the field of energy data, energy statistics, digitalization of the energy forecasts as well as cyber security.
  • Boosting the establishment and development of a successful ecosystem for start-ups in the energy sector and increasing the role of women in the energy sector.
